How Much Should I Pay: 2006 Toyota Rav4

Question: You are doing a great job here.

I’m in market for 2006 RAV4 and checked with Dealer and the prices are high. So decided to check out Auctions.

A dealer quoted $17,725(Auction Price) for a 2006 RAV4 BASE, 4X4 4 Cyl, with mileage around 30 K. Is this a good deal? have to Pay State Tax and others extra. Thanks in Advance.

Queen of the Road: Hello there! Thank you for your kind words. We really appreciate it. I’m assuming that this particular Rav4 is a base model, so we’ll go with base model numbers. To answer your question, the deal is not a good one. Check it out…

For a 2006 Toyota Rav4 4WD 4C with 30,000 miles, prices range from $16,700 (being in above average condition) to $15,800 (being in average condition) and $14,800 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $16,500 to $18,600.

Sorry to burst his bubble, but $17,725 isn’t “auction price“. He’s almost $1,000 off compared to the above average figures. You can try to talk him down to wholesale prices, but if he won’t budge, then walk away.  Have you tried searching through private parties? Craigslist and AutoTrader are great sources.

Good luck and keep us posted on how everything goes! If you find another candidate, we’d be more than happy to help you find the right price. Don’t forget to tell your friends and family about our free personal service.

The Rav4 is a great car, however if you ever find yourself in the market for a new crossover, I would recommend the VW Tiguan. It really excels beyond the competition in overall performace and build quality. In true VW fashion, the Tiguan drives more like a compact than an SUV. It’s responsive, very stable around turns, and incredibly smooth. I have been working with VW to help spread the word and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
