How Much Should I Pay: 2006 Acura MDX (Updated)

This Is An Update To A Previous Question
Question From Kevin: Hi, A local dealer is asking $21000 for a used 2005 MDX touring with 44K miles having Nav/DVD/running board. However this is an out-of-state SUV previously registered in N.Y. Details are below:
2005 Acura MDX Touring w/Navigation/DVD
Vin: 2HNYD18935H523235
Miles: 46,448
Please let us know your thoughts about buying out-of-state cars in general. I have checked the carfax for it. I currently live in Norcal
Regards,
Kevin.
Queen of the Road: Hi Kevin. The offering price is too high, but if you call and try to negotiate, they may lower it. If not, don’t bother. Would you buy the car knowing you’re overpaying? You’re also competiting with people who think they’re getting a great price.
For a 2005 Acura MDX 4WD Touring w/Navi. DVD with 46,450 miles, prices range from $19,200 (being in above average condition) to $17,200 (being in average condition) and $15,200 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $16,900 to $21,200.
You have total advantage at the moment because no one wants to buy SUVs. And everyone is trying to sell their SUVs. I wouldn’t bother with dealers. Have you tried looking for private sellers? You’re more likely to get better deals with them. What area of the bay area do you reside? Look through Craigslist and AutoTrader.
