How Much Should I Sell: 1998 Honda Civic

Question: I have a 98 EX, with 116k miles. The airbags deployed in an accident but the car still has a clear title. I’m asking 4500 OBO, but after 2 months, I’ve had nothin but tire kickers and flakes…I get a lot of calls on it even with that info in the ad, and the car is in great shape cosmetically and mechanically. I’m starting to wonder if I’m asking too much or if the market is just really slow right now. Anybody have any advice?
Queen of the Road: Hello there. If you didn’t have those airbag issues, $4,500 is a very fair price to ask. The market is slow, but the good news is, people are trying to downsize their cars. SUV owners are trying to sell their gas guzzlers before they can seal a deal for a compact.
If it’s a Coupe…
Prices range from $4,600 (being in above average condition) to $3,700 (being in average condition) and $2,700 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $3,400 to $5,400.
If its a Sedan…
Prices range from $4,300 (being in above average condition) to $3,500 (being in average condition) and $2,700 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $3,300 to $5,100.
Again, if you didn’t have those airbag issues, your price would be fine. It also depends on your advertisement. Have you posted ads online (Craigslist or AutoTrader)? Were there plenty of pictures of your car? Did you give an abundance of info? Here’s more tips for selling you car.
