How Much Should I Pay: 2000 Honda Civic

Question: I am looking at a:
2000 Honda Civic EX
100,500 miles
5spd transmission
Zip: 11355
This is a coupe.

Is there anything I need to know about purchasing the car? The seller is unwilling to bring the car to a mechanic due to the fact that he gets off work at 7pm but is offering that I can bring a mechanic there to check it out. Also does the seller have to provide me with all information with regards to the car such as problems with it and what needs to be replaced or can he hide that information from me or just not tell me at all? The car is being sold in as is condition but I cannot know what problems the car has unless it’s brought to a shop.

His asking price is $4300. Is it worth buying?

Queen of the Road: Hello there! Below are the Honda wholesale prices for that car.

For a 2000 Honda Civic Coupe EX 5spd with 100,500 miles, wholesale prices range from $4,900 (being in above average condition) to $4,200 (being in average condition) and $3,500 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $4,200 to $5,800. Private seller should range around 5% to 10% above wholesale prices.

What would you say is the condition of the car? You may want to ask the seller for all the mainenance records to get a ideal of how well the car has been cared for.

The mechanic you bring the car to should be able to determine if there’s anything wrong with it. Be sure to do a Carfax. If you get a bad feeling, then just pass. Trust your intuition. Goodluck and keep us posted!
