Question For AutoBrag: RWD in Snow

Question From Sudeep:  Hello,

I am looking at a used 06 SLK 350, the price is good and the car is in excellent shape. My question is, how is this car in snow(with the winter tires). I have recently moved to Northern Illinois, Considering that is the first time i would be driving in snow what would you suggest?. Should i stick to it and should i look for an AWD or FWD vehicles.

Thank You

CarFinanceGuru: Hi Sudeep. The SLK350 is a beautiful car with a lot of zip. If the snow is light I think you will be in reasonable shape with winter tires. However, due to the car’s low center of gravity I don’t think it’s a good idea to drive it if the snow is past 3 inches. Being that Northen Illinios can get feets of snow in the winter. The only time you’ll really be able to drive this car will be in the summer/spring/autumn seasons. 9 out of 12 months aint bad!

It comes down to personal choice on whether you want the benefit of an SUV for the 3 months that its really needed. Or you can drive a sports car/convertible for 9 out of 12 months but have to deal with some major issues in the winter. If it were us we’d use up our sick leave on serious snow days. Have fun in the SLK.
