How Much Should I Pay: 2008 Ford Edge

Question From Margaret: Hello Expert,

Any idea what a reasonable price is for a 2008 used ford edge with 5,000 miles? It is being sold by a private seller. The car is loaded except for DVD. I was thinking of offering 28,000 but not sure what impact the recession and high inventory levels has on used car sales from private sellers. The car is clear according to the car fax report. Any and all help is appreciated. Edmonds says the value is 27,250 but the seller says KBB is 31,900.

Queen of the Road: Hi Margaret. Welcome to AutoBragBlog! Your vin pulled up as a Limited and SEL, but I went ahead and listed the Limited prices. If otherwise, just let me know…

For a 2008 Ford Edge AWD V6 Crossover Limited with 5,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $29,000 (being in above average condition) to $27,600 (being in average condition) and $26,100 (being in below average condition).

A fair range for a dealership sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $28,600 to $31,700. A private seller will usually aim to sell it for 5%-10%.

Check the carfax and do plenty of research on the history of the vehicle. Ask for their maintenance records. You can even bring a mechanic for a brief inspection. Here’s a good article to read before continuing: Car Buying Tips From An Insider. Let me know if you have any further car questions.

Good luck and keep us posted on how the purchase goes!
