Case Against Dealership: Why You Should Always Have A Mechanic Inspect A Potential Used Car

Question From Ray: Next year around this time in nov.would like to purchase a 2009 acura mdx with low miles(25,000-30,000).what should a 2009 acura mdx be price at next year around this time frame.i’m talking the lowest price to negotiate with finance manager, not the sleezly car salesmen.
another quick question.bought a used car from a small grandma and grandpa lot.owner of this lot never told me any thing about this car being in a wreck.front end was damage bad. but you wouldn’t know this unless you are a mechanic.the car is jack up bad .the car starts up when it wants to.brand new tires are always getting worn out on the tread.the lawyler i have working onthis is dragging is feet big time.he is telling me that we might not be able to win this case because this carlot is a small grandma grandpa lot as opposeto a big lot like ,g.m.a.c. where are chances would be very good in wining the case.but my lawyer still wants me to go to a dealer and get written estimates of all the damages and mechanical problems this car has.in your experience with cars ,do i have a case that i can when with this small car lot.
Queen of the Road: Hi Ray. Oh… AutoBrag is so sorry to hear about your current situation.
The first thing we have to disclose is no one here is a lawyer and this is definitely not legal advice. However, from our experience of working with thousands of dealerships and hundreds of thousands of car shoppers… the best resolution is the one that is acceptable to you. The first thing I would do is talk to the dealership and see if there is an amicable way to solve this problem.
1) Will they take the car back at the same value that you bought it at and apply it to another car on their lot? If the dealership won’ t even talk to you are act like jerks then this path to an easier resolution may not be available to you. In this case you very well may need to go the legal route.
2) You should definitely get the car checked out by a certified mechanic and have them list all of the problems that need repair and what the costs are. It is very important to know exactly what is wrong… (although I hate to say you should have done this prior to buying the car)
This is not going to be pleasant and will take up a lot of time. You are probably feeling terribly cheated and have the ultimate buyer’s remorse. Don’t despair because there is a way to solve the problem. The two items above need to be done right now… let us know the results and we will offer more guidance on what to do next.
As for the Acura pricings for next year, I can’t predict the exact price range of what they’ll cost a year from now. You’ll have to ask us next year through this website again. I can tell you what they cost right NOW.
Good luck!
