How Much Should Pay: 1998 Honda Civic (Updated)

September 29th, 2008

Question From Jessica: Hi, I was wondering what would be a good price for a silver 1998 honda civic DX 4 dr with 145k miles? Thier asking price is $4,000.

Follow Up Comment: The civic is auto and it is being sold by a private party.

Queen of the Road: Hi Jessica! Welcome!

For a 1998 Honda Civic Sedan DX AUTO with 145,000 miles, prices range from $3,100 (being in above average condition) to $2,600 (being in average condition) and $2,000 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices.

A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $2,700 to $3,900.  Private seller should range around +5%-10% above wholesale prices.

What’s the asking price offered? Make sure to check carfax and do plenty of research on the history of the vehicle. You can even bring a mechanic for a brief inspection. Good luck and keep us posted on how the purchase goes! Don’t forget to tell your friends and family about our free personal service.

How Much Should I Pay: 1998 Honda Civic

September 5th, 2008

Question From Tassie: Hi,
I’m in the process of getting a new car and am wondering about what would be a decent price for the following car? Black 1998 Honda Civic DX Coupe 167,000 Klm (In your personal opinion is this too many k’s?)

5 Speed
Pioneer Stereo
American Racing Rims
Summer and Winter Tires & Rims
Air Conditioning
Automate Security Immobilizer
Maitenence history
2 Owners
No accidents other than a small dent (fender bender) on hood
Asking $5500.
Thanks for your advice!

Queen of the Road:  Hi Tassie. Welcome to AutoBragBlog! The average mileage for that model is around 145k miles. So to answer your question, 103.7k miles is fine. Although, I only recommend that you buy a car within a decade old and this one is pushing it. Also $5.5k is too much. So let’s find you a better price…

For a 1998 Honda Civic Coupe DX 5SP with 103,700 miles, wholesale prices range from $3,000 (being in above average condition) to $2,500 (being in average condition) and $1,900 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $2,600 to $3,800. Private sellers generally sell for 5% to 10% above wholesale prices.

If you’re certain that you’re going to purchase it, do a carfax and bring a trusted mechanic for a quick inspection. If you, or any of your friends, have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask us anything. Goodluck and keep us posted!

How Much Should I Pay: 1998 Honda Civic LX

October 9th, 2007

Question:   Hi, I’m looking to buy a:

1998 Honda Civic LX 4 door sedan
Manual   66,000 Mi

What do you think is a good price? Thank you.

Queen of the Road:   For a 1998 Honda Civic Sedan LX 5SP,

Above average condition price is $3,440 with 82,150 miles.
Average condition price is $2,400 with 127,670 miles.

So with 66k miles, around $4,000 is a fair price but should vary based on the condition of the car. Make sure check the records of the vehicle before buying it and have a mechanic inspect it. Are you buying from private or dealership?

Follow Up Comment:   Hi, Thanks for the reply. I’m looking to buy it from a private party seller. They had it listed at $4500. I checked carfax and all the records checked out it was very well taken care but had 2 fender benders listed as minor damage by the police (the owner had ALL reports even the police reports) and had to have front and rear bumpers replaced. Usually I would be concerned with things being shaken up but the car seems well. They had all new tires, timing belt, back brakes, fuel filter replaced, and oil pan replace at a honda dealer. I’m only concerned about some of the NHTSA recalls on it like the ignition switch, I’m still on the fence though. Hmmm, hmm decisions decisions. I’ve generally only been a camry owner and love em but they cant do much with fuel efficiency these civics go to 30-40. Oh and I’m def. gonna have it checked out by my mechanic if i decide to buy. Thanks for all your help and if you have anything else to add please do. Thanks for all your help!

Queen of the Road:  Make sure there is no frame damage but besides that everything looks good. Congrats on the car and let us know if you end up getting it.
