How Much Should I Pay: 2000 Honda Civic
June 23rd, 2008

Question from Reminice: I’m back looking for this car:
Year: 2000
Make: Honda
Model: Civic
Trim: EX Coupe 2dr
Transmission: Manual
Mileage: 50k or ~90k
Buy/Sell: Buying
Party: Private Party or Dealership
Zip: 11355
I was wondering what the average price of this particular car would cost and at what price I should be buying it at no matter how clean it is or strong the engine. I’ve seen $5000 up to $6500. Are there any available located within 30miles in my area that are great bargains? What do I need to know about the vehicle before purchasing it? Trying to get as much info as possible so that I am ready.
Queen of the Road: Hi Reminice! Welcome back. You’re doing the right thing be trying to educate and prepare yourself as much as possible. That is key! I guarantee you’ll save yourself money.
For a 2000 Honda Civic EX 5sp with 50,000 miles, prices range from $6,100 (being in above average condition) to $5,100 (being in average condition) and $4,000 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $4,700 to $7,000.
For a 2000 Honda Civic EX 5sp with 90,000 miles, prices range from $5,400 (being in above average condition) to $4,400 (being in average condition) and $3,300 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $4,000 to $6,300.
It’s difficult to determine a set price to pay without considering the condition of the appearance and the engine. I poked around Craigslist in New York City and there are quite a number of 2000 Honda Civics to choose from. You shouldn’t have a problem finding one. You can find a bargain if you call and negotiate with the owner. You have to take a shot otherwise prices will never lower.
Before purchasing, always be sure to check carfax and do plenty of research on the history of the vehicle. Ask for their maintenance records. You can even bring a mechanic for a brief inspection. If you are buying from a private party, you should expect to pay from 5% to 10% over wholesale market. Let us know if you have any further questions. Keep us posted on how everything goes. You’ll be fine!
