How Much Should I Pay: 2004 Audi A4

August 14th, 2008

Question: You are a true saint to your fellow man for the help you provide here.
I’m looking at this possible car now-

Year: 2004
Make: Audi
Model: A4 1.8 TURBO 4D sedan
Trim: silver with very little extra
Mileage: 52,889
VIN: WAUJC68E14A115508
Buying or Selling? Buying
From Private Party or From A Dealership?: Dealership. If it helps they told me they got it from an auction.

Their price for it is $12,900 at the moment and the zip is 22046.

Queen of the Road: Who me? Aww Shucks! Thank you for your kind words. It’s always a pleasure to help save someone time and money.

For a 2004 Audi A4 Sedan 1.8T with 52,900 miles, prices range from $13,000 (being in above average condition) to $11,700 (being in average condition) and $10,400 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $11.7k to $14.5k.

What condition would you say the car is in? I can’t determine if $12.9k is good yet unless I know the car’s condition. I was unable to find the auction results for the car. Have you done a CarFax yet?

How Much Should I Pay: 2004 Audi S4

March 21st, 2008

Question From Harold: I am looking to get a nice S4 with a spotless history and less than 40K miles. Dealers are asking in the $28K - $32K range, if not more. I even saw a price increase on these cars since last December. What should I really be paying?

Queen of the Road: Hi, Harold! Welcome to AutoBragBlog, where we do your car price researching for you. Which S4 did you want: Cabriolet Quattro, Sedan 4.2 Quattro or the Wagin 4.2L Avant Quattro?

Follow Up Comment: I am looking for the 2004 Audi S4 Sedan, preferably automatic.

Queen of the Road: For a 2004 Audi S4 Sedan 4.2L Quattro with 40,000 miles, prices range from $24,200 (being in above average condition) to $21,700 (being in average condition) and $19,200 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices.

After a dealership buys used car from auction, they’ll usually flip it for an extra +12%-14% more than wholesale. So, estimated when it comes time to sell your car, their retail prices can range from $21.2k - $26.6k. So there’s your range. Let us know if you need any help selling/trading in or buying. Keep us posted!

For the 2004 Cadillac Escalade 4WD, prices range from $24,300 (being in above average condition) to $22,600 (average condition) to $20,900 (being in below average condition).

In my opinion, I wouldn’t bother trading in the car. It doesn’t hurt to fix and detail the car as much as possible, but when trading in a vehicle a dealership will more often pay you less than the wholesale price. Fixing the car is better than detailing, although washing it is a smart idea. Consider that if you are buying a new car from them they will give you abetter price on the trade-in. They still may give you the worst price on the new car. In some states, a trade-in lowers the price of new cars and taxes are charged on the new car minus the trade-in value.
