How Much Should I Pay: 2004 Lexus GS300 & 2003 Toyota Avalon

November 13th, 2008

Question From DD: Buying or Selling:Buying

Year: 2004
Make: Lexus GS 300
Model: 2WD/V6/Auto
Trim: Sedan
Mileage: 80000
Asking Price: 14000+TTL

Buying or Selling: Buying
Year:2003
Make:Toyota Avalon
Model: 2WD/V6/Auto
Trim: Sedan
Mileage: 61000
Asking Price:14250+TTL

Which of the two would you choose?

Queen of the Road: Hi DD. The asking price for the Toyota Avalon is way too high. The Lexus is priced fairly, but I would still insist on them lowering the price. Overall, my pick is the Lexus for now since the price is fair, unless you can talk the Avalon way down.

For a 2004 Lexus GS300 with 80,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $12,500 (being in above average condition) to $10,700 (being in average condition) and $8,900 (being in below average condition). A dealership will usually buy these and flip them for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $10,300 to $14,100.

For a 2003 Toyota Avalon XLS with 61,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $9,900 (being in above average condition) to $8,500 (being in average condition) and $7,000 (being in below average condition). A dealership will usually buy these and flip them for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $8,000 to $11,200. A private seller will usually aim to sell it for 5%-10%.

Be sure to check carfax and do plenty of research on the history of each vehicle. Ask for their maintenance records. You can even bring a mechanic for a brief inspection.

How Much Should I Pay: 2004 Lexus RX330

May 28th, 2008

Question From Deepak:  Thanks for your input, Dropped idea of Quest because the owners had a dog and my son is allergic to dogs. How about this Lexus RX 330, 2004 with 47 K. The dealer asking 25K. Can I have feedback on this? Thanks

Queen of the Road:  Hi Deepak. Here’s what we’ve got for that make and model…

For a 2004 Lexus RX330 AWD with 47,000 miles, prices range from $22,000 (being in above average condition) to $20,100 (being in average condition) and $18,200 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $20,200 to $24,200.

$25k is not a deal. What is the condition of the car? Do not pay $25,000 for that car because it’s marked up way too high. If he won’t be flexible, walk away and search for another SUV. Or you can talk to another salesman who will honor your prices. Goodluck with that and if you stumble upon another car, we’ll help you determine if it’s a worthy deal or not.

How Much Should I Pay: 2004 Lexus RX330 (Updated)

This Is An Update To A Previous Question

FOLLOW UP COMMENT: Thank you very much for your response. One more question - I am discussing a specific model with a dealer:
2004 Lexus RX330 AWD
48000 miles
Navigation system
Above average conditions
Lexus certified pre-owned

Could you help me with pricing estimate of this particular one?

Thank you,

MuscleCarGuy: For a 2004 Lexus RX330 AWD with 48,000 miles, prices can range from $24,100 (being in above average condition) to $22,400 (being in average condition) and $20,800 (being below average condition).

If the car is in outstanding condition, the Dealer didn’t paid more than $24,100 for this car. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale.

Considering the worst case for this car, witch a dealer paid $24,100 and that they want to have a profit of 14%, the highest asking price for this Lexus at a Dealer should be $27,500. That doesn’t mean that you are getting a good deal.

How much is the dealer asking for it? If it is more than $27,500 you should ask if they have something that special on that car to explain the price that they are asking for it.

If you can get it for less than $25,500 you are getting a good deal. Don’t be embarrassed to negotiate, each $500 less that you pay for the car is equal a month of payment on it. Think like if you get $1,000 under their asking price it is equal as drive it for free for two months. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
