Question For AutoBrag: Good Deal or Bad Deal (Updated)

November 9th, 2008

Question From Shlomo: Hi, i have been offered a 2005 accord lx with 36000 miles from a private party. Car is in excellent condition besides for a small crack in the left back bumper. The price is 11,200. I have also been offered a 2007 chevy impala basic model with 20,000 miles for $11,000. Which would you recommend. Thanks

Follow Up Comment:  Hi and thanks for the response. The accord is a 4cy 4 door automatic. The impala is a ls v6. I was wondering if over the long term i would have less problems with the accord. Thanks.

Queen of the Road: Hi there and welcome to AutoBragBlog! It looks like $11,200 for the Honda is a good deal because it’s being offered at a wholesale price. Buying from private party is majority of the time less expensive.

For a 2005 Honda Accord 4C Sedan LX Auto with 36,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $11,700 (being in above average condition) to $10,200 (being in average condition) and $8,600 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices.

A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $9.8k to $13k. In this case, the seller is aiming real high. A private seller will usually aim to sell it for 5%-10%.

Be sure to check carfax on both cars and do plenty of research on the history of each vehicle. Ask for their maintenance records. You can even bring a mechanic for a brief inspection.

About the Impala, just to clarify, which basic model is it: LT 3.5L, LT 3.9L or LTZ?

How Much Should I Pay: 2005 Honda Pilot

October 16th, 2008

Question From Kitty: How much should I pay for a 2005 Honda Pilot EX-L
multi-CD player
sunroof
30,700 miles

Queen of the Road: Hi Kitty. Welcome to our blog. Are you buying from a private seller or a dealership?

For a 2005 Honda PIlot EX-L with 30,700 miles, prices range from $16,600 (being in above average condition) to $15,000 (being in average condition) and $13,300 (being in below average condition). A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $14,800 to $18,300. Private sellers usually mark up 5%-10% above wholesale prices.

Be sure to do plenty of research on the car. Do a carfax and bring a trusted mechanic for a quick inspection. Don’t hesitate to ask for all the maintenance papers. If you, or any of your friends, have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask us anything. Goodluck and keep us posted!

How Much Should I Pay: 2005 Honda Accord

October 15th, 2008

Question:  Hello!

Looking to purchase a 2005 Honda Accord LX 4-cyl automatic sedan. 34K Miles. Was told it is an off lease car.

I have a 2002 Honda civic EX 4-cyl automatic coupe with 56k Miles I was looking to trade in, if I can not sell it on my own. Car has a few minor scratches, and a small dent in fender (2 inch diameter), but mechanically, it is strong and runs perfect. What trade value should I be looking for, or is it better to sell on my own first? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Queen of the Road: Hello there! Is the 2005 Accord being offered from a dealership or a private party? Here’s the Honda wholesale prices for that car…

For a 2005 Honda Accord 4C Sedan LX Automatic with 34,000 miles, prices range from $12,300 (being in above average condition) to $10,900 (being in average condition) and $9,400 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $10,600 to $13,800.

Regarding your 2002 Civic, I almost always recommend selling it yourself. Majority of the time, trading in is how dealerships make their profit. Flipping it. That and their service department is what brings in the dough.

For a 2002 Honda Civic Coupe EX Automatic with 56,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $7,800 (being in above average condition) to $6,600 (being in average condition) and $5,300 (being in below average condition). Private sellers usually mark up 5%-10% above wholesale prices. If you’re in a hurry to get rid of the car, then it makes since to trade it in.

Goodluck and let me know if you need anything else!

July 24th, 2008

This Is An Update To A Previous Question

Question From Hom: Looks like Civics are in great demand nowadays. Someone is offering me 2005 Honda Civic LX with 28000 miles. Its in pretty clean and good condition and the drive feels pretty good too. I think the price is a tad high so I am not sure. What do you think?

Let us know each one are you looking for, that way you can help you pay a fair price for your next car.

Follow Up Comment: Hi

I don’t know why the price didn’t show up. The asking price was $13,100 for 2005 Civic LX Sedan with 28000 miles (Automatic).

I also saw an 2005 Accord Value Package Edition Automatic Sedan with 33000 miles -asking price was $15,000.

Thanks.

MuscleCarGuy: Hi Hom.

For a 2005 Honda Civic Sedan LX Automatic with 28,000 miles, prices range from $14,000 (being in above average condition) to $12,400 (being in average condition) and $10,750 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $12,000 to $15,900.

The price is not bad at all, but try to negotiate for the $12,000 range. Just make sure to check Carfax and do plenty of research on the history of the vehicle. Ask for their maintenance records. You can even bring a mechanic for a brief inspection.

For a 2005 Honda Accord 4 cylinder Sedan LX Automatic VP Edition with 33,000 miles, prices range from $14,250 (being in above average condition) to $12,900 (being in average condition) and $11,500 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $12,800 to $16,200.

The price on this 2005 Accord is for an above average condition vehicle. Is the Accord and perfect condition? If it is in average condition you should try to negotiate for $13-$13.5. Don’t forget to check Carfax and history of the vehicle. Good luck and keep us posted on how the purchase goes! Don’t forget to tell your friends and family about our free personal service.
