How Much Should I Pay: 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Subaru Forester

August 28th, 2008

Question: You are such a nice guy!

My first post, so please pardon if not conforming to the standards here.

I am looking for a AWD car for driving in heavy snow (upper state New York, around Syracuse/Ithaca/Elmira) and need to drive uphill. My search revealed that the best car for that would be Subaru Forester (and Volvo but tends to be expensive).

so, would you please help me?

here are few options for me:

1. Used (certified) car:
Year: 2005, 2006, 2007 or 2008
Make: Subaru
Model: Forester, 4WD, 4cyclinder, Auto
Trim: X or 2.5 X or 2.5 XT (not too care)
Mileage: below 60,000
VIN:
Buying
From A Dealership (better to be certified and/or with warranty)

I am also open to a new car instead (2008 but seems to be difficult to find; 2009)
2. New car
Year: 2009
Make: Subaru
Model: Forester 4WD, 4C, Auto
Trim: (does not matter); X or X premier
Mileage:
VIN:
Buying From A Dealership

Color does not matter; a good price would be a key.
Not inerested in leasinng nor financing unless the rate is 0% (or below 2%).

Thank you so much!

Queen of the Road: Hi there. Thank you for your kind words. I can definitely help you with wholesale prices, but the range needs to be narrowed down. So I’m going to give you an idea of the wholesale prices by matching each year with a different trims at 60,000 miles. That way, you’ll know the what not to pay for cars higher than 60,000 miles.

When you find a specific car, you can run it through me again and I’ll narrow down the range.

For a 2005 Subaru Forester AWD X with 60,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $11,700 (being in above average condition) to $10,200 (being in average condition) and $8,700 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $9,900 to $13,200.

For a 2006 Subaru Forester AWD X with 60,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $13,200 (being in above average condition) to $11,700 (being in average condition) and $10,300 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $11,700 to $14,800.

For a 2007 Subaru Forester AWD 2.5X with 60,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $12,400 (being in above average condition) to $11,500 (being in average condition) and $10,500 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $12,000 to $14,000.

For a 2008 Subaru Forester AWD 2.5X with 60,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $14,800 (being in above average condition) to $13,700 (being in average condition) and $12,600 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $14,300 to $16,700.

For the 2009 Forester, here’s the trim I have in store. Take a look and choose which you’re interested in.

2.5X 4dr SUV AWD w/Premium Pkg,VDC (2.5L 4cyl 4A)

2.5XT Limited 4dr SUV AWD w/VDC (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 4A)

2.5XT 4dr SUV AWD w/VDC (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 4A)

2.5X 4dr SUV AWD w/VDC (2.5L 4cyl 4A)

How Much Should I Pay: 2005-2007 Subaru Outback

June 24th, 2008

Question: Hi,

Looking at Subaru Outbacks, ‘05 to ‘07, XT Limited (that was an option in ‘05), 25 to 33,000 miles, buying from private sellers near zip 99352, 97202 (Portland, OR) or 98110 (Seattle).

Also looking at same car, LL Bean version with 6 cylinder, can only find an 07 at a dealer currently.

Thank you

Queen of the Road: Hi there! Welcome to our blog! Since the range in mileage is so far off, I’ll just average each quote around 30,000 miles.

For a 2005 Subaru Outback XT Limited with 30,000 miles, prices range from $17,800 (being in above average condition) to $16,500 (being in average condition) and $15,200 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $16,900 to $19,600.

For a 2006 Subaru Outback XT Limited with 30,000 miles, prices range from $20,400 (being in above average condition) to $18,000 (being in average condition) and $15,500 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $17,300 to $22,500.

For a 2007 Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Limited with 30,000 miles, prices range from $18,600 (being in above average condition) to $17,100 (being in average condition) and $15,500 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $17,500 to $20,800.

For the 2007 LL Bean version, the XT Limited doesn’t seem to have it. The 2.5I Limited has LL Bean. Did you want to see that one?

How Much Should I Pay: 2005 Subaru Legacy

February 22nd, 2008

Question:  I’m thinking of buying this:

Year: 2005
Make: Subaru Legacy
Model: 4WD Auto
Trim: 2.5 GT
Mileage: 47k
Buying
From Private Party

(link on craigslist)
http://savannah.craigslist.org/car/573684989.html

And selling this:

Year: 2002
Make: Honda Accord Coupe
Model: 2WD Auto (V6)
Trim: Coupe V6, leather, sunroof
Mileage: 77k
Selling
From Private Party

Queen of the Road:  Hello! Is the Honda you’re selling a EX or LX?  For a 2005 Subaru Legacy Sedan 2.5 GT with 47,000 miles,  prices can range from $14,300 (being in above average condition) to $12,500 (being in average condition) to $10,700 (being below average condition).

All the figures above are estimated prices that a dealer paid. So keep in mind that those numbers are all wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for 12%-14% more than wholesale. So estimated retail prices can range from $12,200 to $16,000. What condition would you say the car is in?

$15k sounds reasonable, but you should aim for the wholesale prices. We would haggle down a bit more just because it doesn’t hurt to try. I personally wouldn’t settle for anything higher than $14.5. Check carfax and do plenty of research on the vehicle. You can even bring a mechanic for a brief inspection. Let us know how everything goes.

Question:  I’d love a quote for a used 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Limited edition.
Estimated mileage 35,000, but please average mileages as well.

Thank you, you rock!

Queen of the Day:  Hi there. Thanks! You rock too. For a 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited with 35,000 miles, prices can range from $17,300 (being in above average condition) to $15,500 (being in average condition) and $13,800 (being below average condition).

All the figures above are estimated prices that a dealer paid. So keep in mind that those numbers are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for 12%-14% more than wholesale. Be sure to do plenty of research on the car. Check carfax and ask the owner to see all the past maintenance receipts, etc.
