How Much Should I Pay: 2005 Volvo XC70 (Updated)

July 1st, 2008

This Is An Update To A Previous Question

Follow Up Comment From Catherine: Hello, Thanks for your reply. I made a mistake. The mileage is actually 34,000 on that. I’ve told him I want to walk out the door at 20,000 (that means ttl would be included). Do you think I’m pressing my luck?

There’s also a 2004, similar features, but with 53,000 miles. I was thinking of suggesting 16,000. It is on their website for 21,000.

Finally, is it better to buy a cheaper car (15,000) at 5.6% (credit union) or buying the 20,000 car at 1.9%.

Thanks!

Queen of the Road:  Hi Catherine! It never hurts to ask. Now that we have the correct prices, which happen to be decreased, your chances have improved for getting $20k OTD. So, yes, try asking and if they disapprove, then it shouldn’t be far off from $20k. Here’s the new range…

For a 2005 Volvo XC70 AWD with 34,000 miles, prices range from $19,900 (being in above average condition) to $17,600 (being in average condition) and $15,200 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $16,800 to $22,000.

Regarding the 2004, asking for $16,000 is the perfect price to be persistant with. What are they thinking offering $21k? The sad part about it is someone out there will think it’s a great deal and buy it at that price.

For a 2004 Volvo XC70 AWD with 53,000 miles, prices range from $15,900 (being in above average condition) to $13,700 (being in average condition) and $11,600 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $13,000 to $17,600.

For the financing, I’ll have to run some numbers. How long are the terms for? How many months? Any money down?

How Much Should I Pay: 2005 Volvo XC70

June 30th, 2008

Question From Catherine:  I am in Chicagoland. There are 24,000 miles and a third row seat. Engine is 2.5L and in great condition. They are asking 23,900 but they are willing to negotiate. I’ve told them I want to stay under 20,000.

Queen of the Road: Good call, Catherine! $23.9k is too high. It’s possible to get the car for under $20k.

For a 2005 Volvo XC70 AWD with 24,000 miles, prices range from $21,600 (being in above average condition) to $19,200 (being in average condition) and $16,800 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $18,500 to $23,600.

Car salesmen will think you’re nuts negotiating with the above prices, but little do they know that these prices are from another dealership. Remember, car salesmen don’t expect consumers to come so prepared and knowledgeable. People seem to have forgotten that all power lies with the consumer. Walk away when in doubt. Let us know how everything goes. Goodluck!

How Much Should I Pay: 2004 Cadillac SRX & 2005 Volvo XC90

March 5th, 2008

Question: Hi, I’m wondering what the ranges are for these 2 vehicles.

Year: 2004
Make: Cadillac
Model: SRX
Trim: V6, 4 WD, moonroof, wood trim
Mileage: 47,500
VIN:1GYEE637X40189260
Buying or Selling? Buying
From Private Party or From a Dealership? Dealership

Asking Price $21,995 (seems a touch high to me)

and

Year: 2005
Make: Volvo
Model: XC90

Mileage: 43,900
VIN: YV1CM592551146893
Buying or Selling? Buying
From Private Party or From a Dealership? Dealership
Zip: 46037
Asking Price: $20,990

Thanks in advance

Queen of the Road: Let’s see here….

For a 2004 Cadillac SRX AWD V6 with 47,500 miles, prices range from $15,900 (being in above average condition) to $14,200 (being in average condition) and $12,600 (being in below average condition). Wow! They’re asking for $22k? That’s brave, very brave.

For a 2005 Volvo XC90 AWD  with 43,900 miles, prices range from $22,500 (being in above average condition) to $20,700 (being in average condition) and $19,100 (being in below average condition). The Volvo deal seems more realistic, but I’d still bargain no matter how sweet a deal.

Just imagine when you step foot onto those Fishers dealerships asking for the above figures. Car salesmen will think you’re nuts, but little do they know that these prices are from another dealership. Remember, car salesmen don’t expect consumers to come so prepared and knowledgeable. People seem to have forgotten that all power lies with the consumer. Walk away when in doubt.

How Much Should I Pay: 2005 Volvo T5

February 25th, 2008

Question: Long time viewer of this thread, first time poster.

Year: 2005
Make: Volvo
Model: S40 2WD 5 cyl. 2.5 Turbo (T5)…6 spd. Manual
Trim: Standard
Mileage: 30,000
VIN:
Buying or Selling? Buying
From Private Party or From A Dealership? Dealership

Thanks!

Queen of the Road: Hi there! Welcome to AutoBragBlog!

For a 2005 Volvo S40 T5 with 30,000 miles, wholesale prices can range from $16,500 (being in above average condition) to $15,000 (being in average condition) to $13,400 (being below average condition).

All the figures above are estimated prices that a dealer paid. So keep in mind that those numbers are all wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for 12%-14% more than wholesale. So estimated retail prices can range from $18,300 to $15,000. Talk them down as low as you can (preferrably the wholesale prices.) You can tell them that you have a dealer friend who told you what you should and shouldn’t pay. Make sure you don’t pay the “Dealer Fee” and do plenty of research on the car. You can also bring a mechanic friend to check it out.

Let us know how everything goes.

Follow Up Comment: Great info! Thanks for the help — I’ll keep you posted on what I find.
