Question:   I am in the market for a 2008 Infiniti EX35 Journey.  Loaded with everything except the technology package (premium leather package, etc.).  What would be a fair price if I bought it and what would be a fair lease payment? Please either tell me how much it should be with no money down or let me know what is  acceptable to pay up front (i.e., tax, tags, first months lease payment).  My salesman tells me that the residual value is 54%.

The residual is based on the MSRP, in your case it will be 54% of the MSRP for the specific car that you are buying. In my opinion, I wouldn’t bother trading in the car. It doesn’t hurt to fix and detail the car as much as possible, but when trading in a vehicle a dealership will more often pay you less than the wholesale price. Fixing the car is better than detailing, although washing it is a smart idea. Consider that if you are buying a new car from them they will give you abetter price on the trade-in. They still may give you the worst price on the new car. In some states, a trade-in lowers the price of new cars and taxes are charged on the new car minus the trade-in value.
