How Much Should I Sell: 2004 BMW X3
December 18th, 2008

Question From Tim: Hi, I’m looking to trade in my pre-certified 04 BMW X3 3.0i, in excellent condition, 36K miles. Since it is technically over four years old, apparently my BMW dealership cannot re-certify it, although if I sell it to a private party the pre-certification status will transfer. Accordingly, what is a fair trade-in value for this vehicle? Thanks, and great site, very helpful!
Queen of the Road: Hi Tim. Welcome to our blog. Below are the wholesale prices for that car.
For a 2004 BMW X3 3.0i with 36,000 miles, wholesale prices range from $15,100 (being in above average condition) to $13,300 (being in average condition) and $11,300 (being in below average condition).
A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $12,700 to $16,800. A private seller will usually aim to sell it for 5%-10%.
Most likely the dealership will estimate a very disappointing figure for you, but you can’t blame them for profiting by flipping your car. Have you given any thought to trying to sell privately? Â
