How Much Should I Pay: 2005 Toyota 4Runner

July 18th, 2008

Question: Hi,

Year: 2005
Make: Toyota 4Runner
Model: 4WD Auto V8
Trim: SR5 with sunroof and 17 inch wheels
Mileage: 50300
Buying from a private party

Thanks for your help.

Queen of the Road: Hi there. Let’s see what we’ve got…

For a 2005 Toyota 4 Runner 4WD V8 SR5 with 50,300 miles, wholesale prices range from $12,800 (being in above average condition) to $11,600 (being in average condition) and $10,300 (being in below average condition). Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices.

If you are buying from a dealer you should expect to pay +12%-14% more than wholesale. A dealership’s estimated retail prices could range from $11.7k to $14.4k. If you want to research new car prices, poke around on www.autobrag.com. Good Luck with your negotiation and let us know how everything turns out. How Much Should I Pay: 2007 Ford Mustang (Updated)

May 6th, 2008

This Is An Update To A Previous Question

Follow Up Comment:   Hi Thanks, it’s a 07 v6 convertable prem the car is new it was delivered to the dealer 6/07 it has leather, antilock, traction, shaker sound system stock wheels 16″ it has 240 miles on it

MuscleCarGuy:   Hi Ruthie. I can’t help with prices for a new 2007 Ford Mustang, but I can give you prices for a used 2007 an a new 2008 that way you can have an idea in how much you should pay for that car.

For a Used 2007 Ford Mustang V6 Convertible with 15,000 miles, prices range from $17,200 (being in above average condition) to $16,200 (being in average condition) and $15,200 (being in below average condition).

Keep in mind that the numbers above are the wholesale prices. A dealership will usually aim to sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $17,000 to $19,600.

For a 2008 Ford Mustang V6 Premium 2dr Convertible (4.0L 6cyl 5A),

The Biggest Percentage Off MSRP Price: $27,214.00
MSRP: $30,810.00
ePrice: $27,214.00
Savings: $3,596.00
% OFF MSRP: 11.67 %

2nd Biggest Percentage Off MSRP Price: $27,393.00
MSRP: $31,010.00
ePrice: $27,393.00
Savings: $3,617.00
% OFF MSRP: 11.66 %

The prices above include a $1,500 factory rebate, so the dealer discount for the first car is $2,096.00. If the dealers are selling a 2008 with $2,096.00 discount, the 2007 should have at least $5,000.00 off from the MSRP price. Is the $28,780 MSRP that you mentioned after or before the $2,500 factory discount? That discount you don’t even consider on the negotiation. If the MSRP for that car is $28,780 before the factory rebate, you know you should consider the MSRP as $26,280.00. If that is the case try to offer the dealer $20,000.00 for it. Try to negotiate as much as you can, because they for sure need to sell the entire 2007 inventory. Let us know if you have any other question.

Monster Truck With A Brain

October 9th, 2007

No Driver Needed

OshKosh Truck rolled out a prototype self-driving vehicle that may one day supply soldiers on the battlefield. The 12-ton TerraMax uses on-board computers, GPS, lasers and sophisticated cameras to steer itself around obstacles. It also can be controlled remotely. The Pentagon plans to deploy such vehicles in combat zones to bring supplies to troops without putting convoy drivers at risk. Congress has mandated that 1 in 3 ground combat vehicles be self-driving by 2015.

I understand that the dealers set their price with room for negotiations.

How Much Should I Pay: 2001 Acura MDX

Question: I am looking to buy an Acura MDX and found this:

Year: 2001
Make: Acura
Model: MDX
Zip: 11214
Miles: 75,000
Price is & 12,500 - What do you think? Thanks

Queen of the Road: For a 2001 Acura MDX (assuming without Navi or Touring Navi)…

The above average condition price is $12,350 with 68,025 miles.
The average condition price is $10,550 with 95,900 miles.
For 75k miles, that car could be bought for $11.8-$12 at auction.

The price shuold vary if the car has luxurious options added. Has the vehicle ever been salvaged? Be sure to follow up with a Carfax report if you do decide to pursue this Acura. Did you find this offer at a dealership or private party? Overall I’d say this is a good deal but try $11,800 with $12,000 being the top and see how it goes.

How Much Should I Buy: 07/08 Honda Accord LX & 07/08 Toyota Camry LE

Question:    I am looking a new 2007 and 2008 Honda and Camry, 4 Cylinder, 4 door, Automatic, no extra options:

Honda Accord LX
Toyota Camry LE

I’m near the 48152 area code if that helps.

Thanks!

Queen of the Road:  Let’s begin with the Honda Accords,

For a 2007 Honda Accord LX 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 5A),

The Lowest Internet Price:  $19,500
MSRP: $21,720.00
ePrice $19,500.00
Savings: $2,220.00
% OFF MSRP: 10.22 %

2nd Lowest Internet Price:  $19,763
MSRP: $21,520.00
ePrice $19,763.00
Savings: $1,757.00
% OFF MSRP: 8.16 %

There’s a Cash Incentive of $800-$2,000 is being offered to the Dealership upon purchase. You are able to snatch the incentive from the dealership, so don’t take no for an answer! This excludes CA. Offer expires 10/31/2007 Keep in mind the 2008 is a redesigned Accord so there could be even better deals out there.  Personally I think the 2008 looks much bettter.

For the 2008 Honda Accord LX 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 5A),

The Lowest Internet Price: $21,015
MSRP: $21,755.00
ePrice $21,015.00
Savings: $740.00
% OFF MSRP: 3.40 %
The 2008 Accords don’t offer any incentives at the moment. It will probably be a few months until you see deals coming.

Now for the Toyotas.
For a 2007 Toyota Camry LE 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 5A)

The Lowest Internet Price: $20,008.00
MSRP: $21,794.00
ePrice $20,108.00
Savings: $1,686.00
% OFF MSRP: 7.74 %

2nd Lowest Internet Price:   $20,048.00
MSRP: $21,794.00
ePrice $20,114.00
Savings: $1,680.00
% OFF MSRP: 7.71 %

For a 2008 Toyota Camry LE 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 5A),
The Lowest Internet Price:  $18,901.00
MSRP: $21,934.00
ePrice $18,901.00
Savings: $3,033.00
% OFF MSRP: 13.83 %

2nd Lowest Internet Price:  $18,933.00
MSRP: $21,983.00
ePrice $18,933.00
Savings: $3,050.00
% OFF MSRP: 13.87 %

You can’t lose with the Accord or the Camry.  Things to think about is that every time a vehicle is redesigned the value drops significantly in the used market meaning when it comes time to trade in you lose lots of cash.  Now, if you are going to drive the car over five years and really get value on it then go for the best upfront deal.  Good luck and let us know which one you choose.

How Much Should I Pay: Pre-Owned 2004 Volvo XC70

October 8th, 2007

Question:   2004 Volvo V70 XC AWD
Miles: 41000
Standard options, third row seat, excellent shape, certified pre-owned - warranty to 100k or 2010 whichever comes first.

I have negotiated the price to $23,400 does that sound fair?

thanks

Queen of the Road:    I am assuming you are referring to the 2004 Volvo XC70 four door wagon cross country AWD…ok that’s a long title for any car.  The price you got was OK at best.

Above average condition is $20,855 with 26k miles
Average condition is $17,755 with 43k miles.

Are there any special features in the particular XC70 you are buying?  $23,400 sounds a bit steep.  The extended warranty is worth something but not at the premium you are paying.  At $23,400 the dealer is probably grossing around $4,000 bucks or 20.6% on this sale.  That’s assuming the dealer’s cost was $19,400 (which we think maybe on the high side considering its $1700 over wholesale).  Dealerships deserve to make money buts it’s our job to make sure you get a good deal.  I am assuming you are getting this from a Volvo dealership?

Follow Up Question:  My mechanic did find a very small leak in one of the seals for the transmission. I asked the dealer to fix it but he said that Volvo would not fix such a small leak. I’m thinking this is an opportunity to ask for a reduction to close the deal. It’s $3400 for a new transmission but much less to replace the seal. How much do you think I should ask for? They already offered me an extra year on the warranty at no extra charge. Should I just take it?

Queen of the Road:   In my opinion, you should ask. It wouldn’t hurt to ask. Plus, the extra time you need to sacrifice to pay and get it replaced along with all the extra replacements. You time is money too. If you were to ask, $3400 is not embarrassing being the price coming out of your pocket when you replace the transmission. It’s up to you if you should take it, but with used cars, there’s always a better deal out there. One with less problems relating to replacements. It’s all up to you, my friend. These decisions are tough to make!

How Much Should I Pay: Pre-Owned 2007 Honda Pilot EX-L

Question:    I am in the market for a new car as my car has had a total loss.

Honda Pilot EX-L AWD
either 2007 or 2008
NEW
zip 20166.

Appreciate your help
Thanks

Queen of the Road:   For a 2008 Honda Pilot EX-L AWD (3.5L 6cyl 5A), the lowest internet price we found was just terrible and only a few hundred off MSRP.  We didn’t find any new 2007 either.  However, just for your information an average condition price 2007 pre-owned is $26,250 with 13,450 miles which looks to be about 27% off the price of new.  Above average condition is $28,000 with only 6,700 miles.

We understand buying new is a personal choice but when we can’t see big discounts of new we suggest taking a look at a pre-owned for big savings.
